A lock comprises a knob which is engageable with either of two coaxial shafts, by pulling the knob outwardly a surface 10 thereon engages a surface 4 on a head piece 3 of an interior .shaft 1 and rotating the knob withdraws the bolt, by depressing the knob the surface 10 engages surfaces 8 on an exterior shaft 5 and the combination is set by oscillating the knob about predetermined positions. The exterior shaft 5 is integral with a disc 6 which is rotatable.to a series of predetermined positions and is oscillatable about each position a predetermined number of times. The shaft is keyed to coaxial discs 43 a pawl on each of which is selectively engaged with a ratchet 'tooth of a corresponding one of a series of discs 52 in mesh with one of a series of discs 62 which each has a groove 63 which grooves are thereby aligned. A rib 98 on a plate 39 can then enter the groove allowing a pin 38 on the plate to move in a slot 42 in a bolt plate 31 when the bolt 32 can be withdrawn by pulling out the knob and rotating the shaft 1. The shaft 1 rotates a lever 28 which has a slot 29 for a pin 30 on the bolt plate: A stop piece 35 on a plate 36 is removed from obstructing the end surface of the bolt plate by rotating shaft 5 clockwise so that a tooth 78 on a disc 76 coaxial with discs 43 pivots a lever 82 connected with a lever 87 the end of which displaces one end of the plate 36. The discs 62 are disengaged from discs 52 by turning a knob 68 having a pawl 69 which rotates a lever 71, connected to a block supporting a shaft 65 mounting discs 62, against the action of a spring 75. The setting of the discs is maintained by pawls 56 which are disengaged by turning the shaft 5 anticlockwise so that a tooth 80 on disc 76 pivots lever 82 so that a pin 92 thereon disengages the pawls 56 from discs 52 which rotate under the action of springs 57 thereby upsetting the combination.
