The bookbinding machine is provided with pairs of clamping jaws which are guided along a continuous path and are used to receive inner books and guide the latter past a gluing station. In order to obtain a perfectly expanded glue on the backs of the inner books even at a high operating speed, provision has been made for a nozzle (8) which is situated downstream of the lowest but upstream of the highest surface line, looking in the direction of rotation of the gluing roller, (5) and above the glue bath surface, to be directed towards the peripheral surface of the said gluing roller (5), and for the nozzle (8) to be connected by a pipe (9) to a suction nozzle (10) which is arranged in the glue pot (1) below the glue bath surface, and for a mixer (12) and a pump (11) to be arranged in the pipe, and for a gas feeding pipe (13) to open out into the pipe (9) upstream of the mixer (12). <IMAGE>
