A search register is proposed for use on reference works such as dictionaries, in which book pages are provided with index tabs. As an initial guide, a main register is provided which is formed by register tabs which are arranged one below the other over the height of the book in the form of a descending ladder and whose respective height on the ladder indicates a step value. Assigned to each register tab is a group of normal tabs, again in the form of a descending ladder, which form a sub-register. The number of normal tabs in each sub-register corresponds to the step value of each register tab. Furthermore, a method is proposed for arranging the search register, in which a guide rule is used to arrange a tab on each book page, indicating on a scale the steps of the descending ladder and their step value, in order to attach the tabs at the height which is to be determined.
