The intention is to improve a process for renewing underground metal tanks without drainage system, in which supports for the tank top, formed by angle sections or the like, are arranged on the tank bottom, a layer of concrete with a drainage system being laid on the existing tank bottom and a new tank bottom placed thereupon, the said new tank bottom having to be sealed off with respect to the supports. For this purpose, it is proposed that a liquid-tight casing, extending upwards beyond the later new tank bottom, is arranged around the angle sections or the like, the casing being welded on the one hand to the original tank bottom and on the other hand to the tank top or to a cover and the latter being welded to the angle sections and provided with a connection opening, that after laying the layer of concrete and putting the new tank bottom in place, the latter is welded onto the casing and an angle section or the like bridging the weld is provided, which angle section is welded on the one hand to the new tank bottom and on the other hand to the casing in order to form an annular channel, and that the annular channel is provided with a connection opening. By these measures, conditions which are easier to monitor and selectively test are created. Using the cavities, the tightness of the welds can be checked by means of pressure application. In addition, the cavities themselves represent additional safety zones. The process is of significance in particular for metal tanks for storing fuels.
