Device for the topping of beet bearing leaves and seated in the ground, for mounting on a vehicle, having a knife for cutting off the tops, having a feeler roller running over the beet, determining the cutting height of the knife and rotating in the direction of travel, and having rotating throwing elements for conveying the cut-off leaves into a higher collecting space, characterised in that the feeler roller and the knife co-operating with it are arranged in front in the running direction of the vehicle, and in that the knife has an upper side face which is directed obliquely rearwards and upwards and on which the beet tops cut off by the knife and bearing leaves are conveyed by the feeler roller into the effective range of the throwing elements arranged behind the feeler roller in the running direction of the vehicle.
