In the known prodn. of aromatic polycarboxylic acids by oxidation of the corresponding alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons (esp. prodn. of terephthalic acid from p-xylene) in the liquid phase at elevated temps. and pressures, using molecular oxygen and in the pres. of an aliphatic acid (e.g. acetic acid), a heavy metal catalyst (e.g. Co acetate) and a so-called 'peroxide activator' (e.g. methyl ethyl ketone) (cf. US.2, 245, 528, 3, 036, 122), higher conversions are obtd. if the 'peroxide activator' is added in the later stages of the oxidation rather than at the beginning.
