PURPOSE:To obtain a cationizing agent contg. less quantities of unreacted materials and by-products, by neutralizing a tert. amine with a specified org. acid and reacting it with epichlorohydrin. CONSTITUTION:A tert. amine of the formula (wherein R1, R2, R3 are each CH3, C2H5) is neutralized with an equimolar quantity of a monobasic org. acid of the formula R-COOH (wherein R is a 1-8C alkyl, phenyl) having a dissociation constant (PKa) of 4 or above and then reacted with epichlorohydrin. Examples of the org. acids are acetic, propionic and, benzoic acids. It is not preferred from the viewpoint of the subsequent cationizing reaction of polymers that the resulting cationizing agent contains a large quantity of unreacted epichlorohydrin. When trimethylamine is used, it is preferred to use epichlorohydrin in a quantity of 0.95-1.08mol per mole of the amine. |
