A device for the automatic guidance of tools, in particular for welding, cutting and adhesive-bonding devices, is described. In order to rectify parallax errors which are caused by the unavoidable distance between a sensor and the tool in the feed direction, the sensor is attached via a separate sensor slide to a basic body in such a way that it can be vertically and/or transversely adjusted be servomotors. A control circuit delivers a first control signal which acts on the servomotors of the sensor slide in such a way that the correct vertical and/or transverse setting of the sensor with regard to the path to be followed is maintained. Furthermore, the control circuit contains a delay and correction stage which forms a second control signal from a correction signal and the first control signal at a speed signal representative of the defined speed, which second control signal acts on the servomotors of the tool slide in such a way that the tool, at any instant, assumes a vertical and/or transverse position which has been determined and assumed by the sensor at a time before this instant corresponding to the quotient of distance and speed.
