In an appliance for the continuous washing of a textile material web, the textile material runs over a plurality of deflecting rollers, at least one of which is arranged below the liquid level in the washing tank. So that a washing appliance can be overridden in a continuous system, in such a way that the material web does not enter the liquid and, for example, cause soiling there, according to the invention the deflecting member is mounted so as to be movable out of the tank. The material web thus, as before, runs round all the deflecting rollers of the washing appliance, but now outside the liquid introduced into the tank.
