The invention relates to a universal motor, especially for washing machines, having air-inlet openings (22) in the bearing plate (20) on the commutator side, and having air-outlet openings (26), which are arranged radially over the circumference of the motor housing (28). Provided according to the invention in the commutator space (14) is an air-guide cylinder (16) which, with a commutator (2), forms a concentric air gap (18) having a thickness of at least several mm, and a number of holes (30), which are arranged in the region of the air gap (18), are provided in the bearing plate (20) as air-inlet openings (22). With the aid of a simple and cost-effective device, this design prevents the carbon dust which is worn off the brushes being deposited in the commutator space (14). <IMAGE>
