Variously derivatised succinic acids substituted in the 2-position are prepared by reacting unsaturated carboxylic acid derivatives with carbon monoxide and with a nucleophilic component with at least one mobile hydrogen atom in the presence of cobalt compounds and, if appropriate, in the presence of one or more tertiary nitrogen bases at increased pressure and increased temperature.
