The electron affinity of one electrolyte is higher than that of the other, but the ions are both of the same polarity. It can be used as a battery, simply by connecting a load across the electrodes. Charging can be by conventional electrical means or by chemical fuel supply, e.g. the supply of gases through porous electrodes. - One version of the cell has a supply of hydrogen to one electrode chamber containing Titanium trichloride solution and a supply of oxygen to the other chamber containing ferric chloride solution. Another version includes a pumping system which recharges the cell by supplying fresh electrolyte solutions from reservoirs. |
