<p>Reinforced polyamide compsn. comprises 30-74.95% of a polyamide (I) which is normally inflammable, 15-55% of a reinforcing agent (II), esp. glass fibres, 5-30% of a halogenated fire retardant (III) with >=30 wt % halo content, and as synergist for (III) a mixt. of 5-30 wt % Zn borate (IV) thermally-stable at polyamide processing temps. and 0.05-1.5% of an oxide (V). All % are by wt. (V) is Sb2O3, ZnO, Pb oxide, FeO, Fe2O3, SnO, SnO2 and/or CdO, most pref. 0.1-1% Sb2O3. The wt. ratio (III):(IV) + (V) is 1:3-2:1, esp. 1:2-1 and the reinforced compsn. has creep resistance >=300 (DIN 53480/1972) and is rated >=94 VI in the UL 94 test using 1.6 mm thick test pieces. Use for moulding e.g. electrical insulation elements for transformers etc. Compsns. have excellent resistance to fire and carbonisation (in an electric arc) even when reinforced with glass fibres, and mechanical props. are as good as those of conventional compsns.</p> |
