A process for converting chemical energy into electrical energy by steps (1) and (2) below and for converting electrical energy into chemical energy by steps (1) and (3) below is claimed. Steps comprise (1) contacting electrolytes of different ionic compsn. with a suitable electrode in an electrode chamber, the electrode chamber, the electrode chambers being separated from each other by a porous wall, the ionic compsn. of the electrolytes being such that one electrolyte contains ions having an electron-uptake capacity which is different to that of the electron uptake capacity of ions inthe other electrolyte, both ions having the same charge polarity (i.e. both positively or negatively charged), (2) applying an external conductor of electrons between the said electrodes to allow electrons released by the one electrode by a metal or ions with the lower electron uptake capacity to be taken up by the other electrode by ions with a higer electron uptake capacity, and (3) applying an electrical potential between the electrodes (direct current) so that electrons are taken up by the one electrode by the ions with higher electron uptake capacity and electrons are given up by the ions with lower electron uptake capacity at the other electrode. - The wall is provided with openings in which there is an electric field which obstructs the passage to and fro of the said ions with higher and lower electron uptake capacity, but does not prevent passage of the counter-ions of the latter ions. |
