Microbes are controlled by contacting a medium conducive to microbial growth with a 1:1 complex of a heavy metal ion with a polyfunctional opt. substd. organic acid. The complex has a aq. proton induced dissociation property represented by a sigmoidally-shaped curved on a Cartesian coord. plot of the negative log (metal ion concn.) v. negative log (hydrogen ion concn.). The metal ion is only released at the rate required to destroy the microbes.
