Anti-bubble valve for medical perfusion - with liquid entering bag to pass between membrane and plate to outlet while bubbles rise into air space

The valve is used for medical perfusion and prevents bubbles passing into the liquid entering the patient's blood-stream. It comprises a flexible plastic bag (1) with a membrane on one side, forming part of the bag, fixed to the edges of a circular valve plate (8). A liquid is pumped (4) into the bottom of the bag and rises to cover the membrane, providing a reservoir. The fluid passes through holes (10) into the plate/membrane interface and flows through the outlet (9). Bubbles entering with the liquid rise into the air space (3) above fluid level, this space communicating with the ambient atmosphere through a filter (6, 6a).
