The electrostatic loudspeaker consists of an elastic membrane between two rigid plates carrying the electrodes and with holes through it. The assembly is held at its edges in a frame. The gaps between membrane and plates have elastic spacers touching the membrane and the plates and acting as dampers to prevent the membrane touching either plate. The advantage of these spacers lies in their allowing the electrodes to carry a higher charge without causing the membrane to stick to one or other plate under certain conditions.
