A dental device consists of a holder with a dispenser for applying a fluorescent substance to the teeth and gums, and incorporating a lamp for making the substance visible. The substance adheres to regions where plaque collects, so that the device can be used for diagnosis of e.g. carries. The casing (1) has a battery compartment (2), with a bulb (7) at the top, with a filter (8) over it to give the fluorescent effect. Alongside the battery compartment is a dispenser (10) for the fluorescent substance, with a button (11) projecting from it to operate a valve (12) so that the substance is discharged from a nozzle (14) at the side. A folding mirror is mounted above the battery compartment behind the lamp.
