NEW MATERIAL:An compound of formula I [Ar is phenyl or styryl which may be respectively substituted; R is H, lower alkyl or (substituted) phenyl]. EXAMPLE:2-N,N-Ditolylamino-5-(beta-phenylstyryl)thiophene. USE:An organic photoconductive material for electrophotography and fluoescent brightener. PREPARATION:A phenyl derivative of formula II [Y is formula III (Z is halogen) or PO(OR')2 (R' is lower alkyl)] is reacted with an aldehyde compound of formula IV in the presence of a basic catalyst at room temperature -100 deg.C to give the compound of formula I . The compound of formula II is obtained easily by reacting the corresponding halomethyl compound with a trialkyl phosphite or triphenylphosphine.
