An amino-acid preparation is produced from algal material by treating it at a temperature of 120‹ to 200‹ C. with an aqueous solution of a strong mineral acid in the proportion of from 5 to 10 parts by weight of acid solution for each part by weight of starting material, and neutralizing and drying the hydrolysate thus obtained. Sulphuric or hydrochloric acid may be used and the product may be neutralized by caustic alkali, ammonia or hydrated lime. The starting material may be algµ or the residue from the extraction of agar-agar from algµ. |
