In a motor vehicle having an engine/transmission unit longitudinally arranged at the same end of the vehicle as the driven wheels 1, 5 with the output shaft or each of two output shafts 4 from the transmission connected to the adjacent wheel drive shaft 16 by chain or spur gearing disposed in a separate gear casing 7, each gear casing 7 is secured to the vehicle chassis so that the position of the axis of the output shaft 12 therefrom is fixed and a disc 13 on each output shaft 13 is braked by brake mechanism 14 mounted on the casing 7 or on the chassis 8. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), chain or spur gearing in a casing on one side of the chassis is driven by a single output from the engine/transmission unit and has a single output shaft which drives differential gearing connected directly to the adjacent wheel drive shaft and to the other wheel drive shaft by a transverse transmission shaft extending into a relay casing on the other side of the chassis.
