NEW MATERIAL:The bicyclo[3,3,0]octane derivative of formula I (R<1> is H or alkyl; R<2> and R<3> are H or OH-protecting group; X is ethylene or vinylene). EXAMPLE:2-Hydroxy-3-( 4-methoxycarbonyl-1-butenyl )-6-exo-t-butyldimethylsilyloxymethyl-7-endo-t-butyldimethylsilyloxybi cyclo[3,3,0]octane. USE:A synthetic intermediate for 9(0)-methano-DELTA<6(9alpha)>-PGI1 having strong blood platelet coagulation inhibiting activity and useful as the remedy and preventive for various circulatory diseases. PREPARATION:The compound of formula V which is one of the compound of formula I can be produced by (1) introducing methylene group to the cyclopentanone derivative of formula I , (2) hydrating the resultant compound of formula III, (3) reacting the produced hydroxymethylcyclopentane derivative of formula IVwith an oxidizing agent in the presence of sodium acetate, and (4) treating the reaction product with heat.
