A wire saw, e.g. for cutting granite, comprises a laterally flexible endless metal wire loop for driving around a pair of sheaves, spaced blocks of composite comminuted abrasive in a bonding matrix mounted along the wire, and layers of flexible metal each metallurgically bonded to a corresponding block and bonded to the wire by elastically pliant epoxy-based adhesive, and sandwiched between wire and block. The wire is pref. a cylindrical body with a helical slot along its length, the slot twist direction being reversed along the wire and the blocks being mounted spaced in the slot. The layers are e.g. of Cu and promote bonding while imparting mounting resiliency.
|
