NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I [Ar is (substituted) phenyl or (substituted) styryl; R is H, lower alkyl or (substituted) phenyl]. EXAMPLE:2-Methyl-4-N,N-diphenylamino-beta-phenylstilbene. USE:An organic photoconductor material for electrophotography and a fluorescent brightener. PREPARATION:A phenyl derivative of formula II [Y is triphenylphosphonium of formula III (Z<-> is halogen) or a dialkyl phosphite of the formula -PO(OR')2 (R' is lower alkyl)], e.g. diethyl 1,1-diphenylmethylphosphonate, is reacted with a 2-methyl-4-N,N-diphenylaminobenzaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst, e.g. potassium tert-butoxide, usually in a solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide (DMF), preferably at room temperature -80 deg.C.
