PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium which has high coercive force, a small noise level, high S/N and high corrosion resistance by forming a thin magnetic film layer of a Co-Ni-Cr alloy contg. about 3-17atom% Cr on a Cr layer of a nonmagnetic base to about 400-2,000Angstrom thickness. CONSTITUTION:The Cr film is constituted as the underlying layer of the magnetic film consisting of the Co-Ni-Cr alloy. The alloy film in which Cr is incorporated at about 3-17atom% and which has about 400-2,000Angstrom magnetic film thickness is used for the magnetic film consisting of the Co-Ni-Cr alloy. For example, the aluminum substrate plated with Ni-P is subjected to DC magnetron sputtering using Cr having 8-inch diameter as a target under the conditions of PAr 5milliTorr to form the Cr layer on the Ni-P plating layer at about 2,500Angstrom . The substrate formed with the Cr layer is then subjected to DC magnetron sputtering using the Co of the 8-inch diameter placed with 7X7mm Ni chip and 7X7mm Cr chip as the target under the conditions of PAr5milliTorr to form the thin magnetic film layer consisting of the Co-Ni-Cr alloy on the Cr layer.
