1,255,504. Polyglycidyl esters; polyalkylene glycol derivatives. CIBA-GEIGY A.G. 28 Jan., 1969 [29 Jan., 1968], No. 4595/69. Headings C3B and C3R. Novel polyglycidyl esters of the general formula where R 1 and R 2 are the residues notionally derived by removing the carboxyl groups from an aromatic acid having m + 1 and n + 1 carboxyl groups respectively, A is a residue of a polyalkylene glycol of average molecular weight at least 200, and m and n are 1, 2 or 3, are prepared by reacting a partial ester of the formula where R 3 is H or a cation, preferably alkali metal, with an epihalohydrin in one or several stages. Several modifications are described but the preferred method comprises reacting an epihalohydrin in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. a tert. amine or quaternary ammonium compound, with a partial ester of the above formula wherein R 3 is H to form an intermediate product containing at least one halohydrin group and dehydrohalogenating. Other catalysts specified for the addition of epihalohydrin include ion-exchange resins, trialkyl hydrazonium salts, thioethers and sulphonium salts. The polyglycidyl esters may be cured by any of the usual epoxy resin curing agents. They may be mixed with active diluents, e.g. styrene oxide, various glycidyl ethers and esters and cycloaliphatic mono-epoxides. They may also be mixed with other curable polyepoxides, phenoplasts and aminoplasts. The compounds may be partially or completely esterified, particularly with higher unsaturated fatty acids. Fillers, plasticizers and solvents may be added. Uses.-Laminating, coating &c. compositions, floor coverings, adhesives, embedding and insulating compositions for electrotechnology. |
