A low-carbon steel slab contg. (by wt.) 0.015-0.1% sol. Al, 0.01-0.1% Nb, 0.01-0.1% Ti and/or 0.01-0.15% V, is formed into a slab by any process in which the steel is maintained at a temp. above Ar3, and the above element is dissolved and dispersed uniformly throughout the slab. The slab is maintained above the Ar3 temp. until hot rolling commences, and is rolled above that temp. The hot-rolled strip produced may be cold-rolled and then annealed. Pref. the steel contains 0.01-0.2% C, 0.5-2% Mn, 0.03-0.5% and 0.0075-0.015%N, and may also contain P, Ni, Cr, Mo, Cu and/or Al. By maintaining the steel above Ar3 until hot-rolling is complete the carbide/nitride forming elements are maintained in soln. They then ppt. in a uniform finely dispersed state during subsequent processing to produce improved strength as deep drawing properties in the final prod.
|
