In a method for carrying out the threadlessbinding of piles of sheets or leaves which a solid meltable adhesive free from solvent is used and in which the solid adhesive is converted into the fluid adhesive state by the action of heat, the solid adhesive is in the form of a foil and is applied to the back or spine of the pile of sheets or leaves and subsequently heated. The apparatus shown comprises a manuallyoperated machine for the threadless binding of piles of sheets or leaves 1, of which the sheetedges 2 to be glued are to be contacted with a support 3 which is coated with a layer of meltable adhesive. The support 3, which is a slip-fold, is fed to the sheet-edges 2 by a spiked feed bar 4. The pile of sheets 1 is clamped in position by a bipartite clamp 6 provided at a distance from a jogging surface 8. The latter constitutes a part of a hot-plate 9 which consists of hot-plate sections 11 and 12. The plate is heated by elements disposed in a table top 20. The support 3 is moved into the gap between the pile of sheets 1 and the hot-plate 9 by lowering the hot-plate through rotation of an eccentric 16 and these operating the feed bar 4. The eccentric 16 is again rotated so raising the hot-plate 9 into contact with the support 3 prior to heating the plate with subsequent melting of the adhesive. The sections 11, 12 of the hot-plate are then moved apart after further rotation of the eccentric 16 which has allowed the hot-plate to be lowered once again. Renewed rotation of the eccentric 16 causes the trestle 14 on which the hot-plate is supported rise with the table 20 and the separated hot-plate sections such that the edge portions of the slip-fold 3 are wrapped around the lower edge of the clamped leaves 1 as is shown in Fig. 7. The eccentric may be rotated by mechanism also linked to the movable hot-plate section 12. |
