A measuring unit (1) determines the percentage deviation of the effective stroke duration from the theoretical value from the time sequence of the stroke pulses (X1). This digital percentage value (X2) is fed to a digital-analog converter (2) whose output forms a standard voltage (X3) for a measuring circuit (3). The stroke length XO is sensed by a remote resistance detector in the form of a voltage divider and combined with the standard voltage to produce a display signal (X4). The latter goes to an analog-digital converter (4) which produces a bcd signal for the display (5).
