In a flat display screen in which electrons are fed from a rear gas discharge through selected holes in a control structure into a plasma-free space and, after being post-accelerated to a few kV therein, strike a phosphor screen, the gas is composed of <3>He. This isotope has all the beneficial properties of natural helium (no chemical reactions with the environment, high breakdown strength, low maintaining voltage) and also makes possible a higher current density accompanied by low sputtering rates. The picture tube is primarily used in data display and (colour) television sets. <IMAGE>
