The invention describes a device and a method for coating iron cores for transformers, inductor coils, measurement transducers or the like, by means of which it is possible to minimise the air gap occurring at the butt joints between adjacent sheet-metal edges. This is done by displacing the individual metal sheet (3), which is placed on with an air gap, in the direction of the butt joint (8). To this end, at least one gripper element (2) of a sheet-metal coating device (1) can be moved individually in this direction, and its retaining force can be controlled individually. <IMAGE>
