Fireshaft walls in open annular chamber furnaces for manufacturing electrodes for aluminium fused-mass electrolysis are subject to great stresses as a result of temperature change and one-sided force effect, which lead to deformations or collapse of the fireshaft walls. Furnace stones consisting of two sections (1, 2), one section (1) of which, which projects into the fireshaft, has a polygonal, aerodynamically favourable cross-section, there projecting from the end surfaces (10) of this section, forming shoulder-like stops, fireshaft wall-side sections (2) of rectangular cross-section which have groove and tongue elements (25, 26), serve to support the fireshaft walls so that perfect combustion management is guaranteed. <IMAGE>
