Process for the production of silicon carbide fibres

The process of pyrolytic deposition from the gas phase uses a reaction chamber (8) through which a core wire of tungsten has hitherto been drawn and heated by the passage of current. This produces relatively expensive SiC fibres. They become significantly cheaper if the core wire used is a glass fibre (5) drawn at the top of the reaction chamber from a preform (1) of relatively large diameter to a diameter of about 10 mu m, as is known in the production of optical waveguides (optical fibres). <IMAGE>
