The invention relates to a process for the instrumental detection of flaws and for obtaining corresponding computer control signals in the case of solid wood, wood-based materials and other materials with an organically grown structure by utilising their thermal properties. The invention aims to objectivise the flaw detection in wood as a prerequisite to a thorough automation of the cutting process and aims to give a higher degree of material utilisation. The invention is based on the object of developing a defectoscopic process which is appropriate to the specific thermal properties of solid wood and analogous materials and by means of which solid wood can be tested for flaws by a continuous process and the characteristic data thus obtained be processed as signals for a computer. According to the invention this is achieved by heating the material to be tested in a continuous process using different radiant heat sources and carrying out a radiant heat measurement after a short duration.
