1,234,326. Grafted vinyl chloride polymers. SEKISUI KAGAKU KOGYO K.K. 18 July, 1969 [20 July, 1968], No. 36412/69. Heading C3G. A graft polymer is prepared by bringing gaseous 1,3-butadiene into contact with a vinyl chloride polymer powder impregnated with 1 to 50% by weight of an alkyl acrylate or alkyl methacrylate and irradiating the butadiene and impregnated polymer with ionizing radiation while maintaining the concentration of the butadiene in the gaseous state, whereby a graft polymer of 1 to 30% by weight of alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and 6 to 30% of butadiene based on the weight of vinyl chloride polymer is obtained. The acrylate or methacrylate may be used in admixture with a styrene monomer. Examples are given in which butadiene is contacted with (a) polyvinyl chloride impregnated with methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, nbutyl methacrylate or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate; (b) vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer impregnated with 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and (c) chlorinated polyvinyl chloride impregnated with 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. |
