a -Olefines having up to 12C are polymerized in the presence of a 3 component catalyst comprising (1) an aluminium sesquihalide of formula R3Al2X3 in which R = C1 to C15 and X is a halogen, (2) a Group IVa-VIa transition metal halide, and (3) an alkali metal salt of an inorganic oxyacid. The polymerization may be effected with the a -olefine in vapour phase or in a solvent either batchwise or continuously at 0-200 DEG C. and up to 100 kg./cm2. Specified as olefines are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, decene-1, 3-methylbutene-1, 4-methylpentene-1, 4-methylhexene-1, allylbenzene, styrene, o-methyl styrene, vinyl cyclohexane, butadiene, isoprene and cyclohexadiene. The molecular weight of the polymers may be controlled by including in the polymerization system hydrogen, or halides or alkyl compounds of zinc, cadmium, mercury, or hydrogen halides or alkyl halides. The polymers may be fractionated by solvent extraction.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst comprises (1) an aluminium sesquihalide (2) a halide of a transition metal of Groups IVa-VIa and (3) an alkali metal salt of an inorganic oxyacid. Component (1) is represented by the general formula R3Al2X3 where R = C1-15 and X = Cl, Sr or I. Numerous examples are given. Component (2) is preferably TiCl3 although halides of Zr, V, Cr and Mo are mentioned. With reference to component (3) salts of Ni, Na, K, Rb and Cs are contemplated. A long list of oxyacids is mentioned. |
