POLYPHENYLENE OXIDE/POLYSTYRENE COMPOSITIONS FIRE RETARDED WITH 3-HYDROXYALKYL PHOSPHINE OXIDES

Thermoplastic polyphenylene oxide compositions such as polyphenylene oxide that has been modified with high impact polystyrene are rendered fire retardant by the addition of an effective amount of a 3-hydroxyalkyl phosphine oxide such as n-butyl bis(3-hydroxypropyl) phosphine oxide. The compositions are useful as engineering thermoplastics in the manufacture of appliances and in the transportation and electrical/electronic industries. The PPO/styrene resins of the invention are superior in flame resistance to such resins containing phosphate esters as the flame retardant agent.
