Catalyst consists of an alumina carrier and >=1 hydrogenating metal component from Group VIB and one from Group VIII, in which the mean pore radius of the carrier is 70-95 angstroms and total pore vol. 0.45-1.50 ml/g 75% min. of the pore vol. and at least 0.40 ml/g consists of pores with radius within 10 angstroms of the mean radius. Total surface area is 130-500. Hydro-desulphurising of oils contg. asphaltenes, using the catalyst, pref. in the second of a two-stage process is also described. Used pref. for treatment of oils contg. over 40 wt.% asphaltenes and over 100 ppm. Ni and V impurities, e.g. residues from atmos. and vacuum distn. boiling at over 343 degrees C and contg. substantial amounts boiling at over 538 degrees C. Higher activity and slower de-activation rates than known catalysts with conventional alumina carriers are provided.
|
