Catalytic oxidn. of SO2 is carried out by contacting a gas mixt. contg. 8-13 vol.% SO2 and 5-13 vol.% O2 with the catalyst. The gas mixt. is at 20-80 degrees C below the ignition temp. of the catalyst, whilst the catalyst is kept at 420-580 degrees C by indirect heat exchange, with condensn. of vaporisation of S at a pressure of 0.6-1.2 kp/cm2. The equipment consists of a jacketed exchanger with catalyst-filled tubes surrounded by sulphur in liquid/vapour phase. Process is used for prodn. of a gas mixt. with a SO3 partial pressure of 65-85 torr, which is often used for the sulph(on)ation of organic materials. It ensuresd that the catalyst operating temp. profile is close to the optimum, so that the amt. of catalyst needed is near the theoretical amt. Controlled dissipation of the heat of reaction in the first stage is possible and the lower gas temp. also excludes the risk of catalyst deactivation or damage by overheating. Very simple equipment is used.
|
