The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein R is an alkyl group having at least two carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl, alkylcycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl or aralkyl group, acid addition salts thereof, and their preparation by reaction of a compound wherein R is a hydrogen atom with either (a) a hydrocarbon iodide or (b) an aldehyde or ketone followed by catalytic hydrogenation. The compounds of the invention have antibiotic activity.
