Facilitating the electrothermal reduction of ores and the production of calcium carbide by using carbohydrate oils, this apparatus provides for the oil to be fed into the crater of a reduction furnace through a vertical conduit (4) in the electrode. After mixing the oil with the pulverised solid reactants to be used in the metallurgical process of the furnace, the mixture is fed through a pipe (5), the lower end of which protrudes into the vertical conduit and has an opening that is smaller than the cross-section of the conduit. The mixture is then dropped into the interior of the furnace and a gas is caused to flow downstream through the conduit.
