Solids which settle or float into a cylindrical portion 2, which may extend from the bottom or top of a settling tank (1) depending on relative densities, are compressed by reciprocating plunger 5, forcing residual liquid back into the tank past the plunger (Fig. 2, not shown); then forced out of the tank when valve 3 opens towards the end of the plunger stroke (Fig. 4, not shown). The discharge pipe 4 is bent to provide resistance and create a back pressure against solids discharge. The settling tank (Fig. 1, not shown) has an inlet (6), outlet (7) and filter (8). A particular application is removing coke from a hydrocarbon cracking plant. |
