A heel tightener for ski bindings comprises (a) a tensile element or elements extending along opposite sides of the heel and attached directly or indirectly to the ski, (b) a forwardly open frame extending behind the heel, (c) a thrust member mounted in the frame and (d) at least one spring between the forward end of the thrust member and the means for securing the tensile elements to the ski. The thrust member is mounted for pivotal movement about an axis which is transverse to the ski and parallel with the surface of the ski, the forward end of the thrust member being engageable in the heel groove and adapted to be locked in its clamping position. As shown, cable sections 2, 3 are secured to a turntable 1 of known construction, each cable section carrying a nipple 4, 5 bearing on a compression spring surrounding the nipple at the end of the cable. Each spring 8, 9 engages with a hook portion of a frame 10, and when a fall of the skier causes a strong rearward and upward pressure to be applied to the frame 10, the springs 8, 9 are compressed by the spring washers 6, 7. A locking bolt 11 is secured to the nipple 4, and when the spring 8 has been compressed sufficiently to pull the locking bolt out of an opening formed in keeper 12 for guiding the locking bolt, the pull of the cable effects a pivotal movement of the spring 8 and, as a result, the spring 8 is disengaged from the retaining hook so that the cable 2 becomes detached from the frame 10. Means for restoring the spring 8 to its locking position are described. The frame 10, close to the cross-bar 17, is provided with a shaft 18 on which is pivotally mounted a thrust member 19 which fits the opening in the frame 10 and can be moved upwardly out of the frame. The forward end of the thrust member 19 has a roller 21 which conforms to the curvature of the heel groove. Four modifications of the engaging and disengaging means are also described, and in one of these a gas spring, known per se, is used as a spring element.
