A boule 10 is grown in a furnace 3 on a rotating rod 1 of monocrystalline material by feeling powdered material to an intermediate zone of the rod heated by an oxy-hydrogen torch. The powder passes downwards together with oxygen from a percussion chamber 4 and is then surrounded by hydrogen before con tact with the boule being formed. Both ends of rod 1 are rotated outside furnace 3. Rod 1 may be moved longitudunally during the process. The material may be corundum, spinet, rutile, or garnet. In a modification (Fig. 2), two spaced boules (25 and 26) are formed on a single rod. |
