In a static convertor comprising a plurality of silicon diodes connected in parallel to carry a load current in their forward direction, which current because of circuit inductance is unequally distributed amongst them, the diodes having different inverse voltage avalanche breakdown characteristics, and wherein circuit inductance causes the diode carrying the higher or highest mean load to turn off first during the commutation period, it is arranged that the diode with the highest avalanche voltage is placed in the position in the circuit (as determined by experiment) which carries the lowest forward current. Since this diode will be the last to commutate off it will experience the full surge current and will be able to withstand it without breakdown. Thereafter the other diode or diodes will be subjected to a diminishing surge current. |
