The seat backrest lowering mechanism has a handle rotating a shaft (3) to which an eccentric is fixed. A pinion (5) is mounted on the eccentric (6) and meshes tangentially with an internal gear ring (12) formed in an arm fixed to the backrest. The pinion is in contact with an arm fixed to the seat by means of fingers (13) fitting freely in holes (14) formed in the arm. Thus, the pinion is locked in place. When the shaft is turned the arm fixed to the backrest is turned through an angle via the pinion until locked when rotation ceases, the backrest then being secured in the new position.
