Sizing compsn. comprises (a) rosing modified with 5-50 wt % of 3-6C alpha, beta-unsatd. aliphatic acid and/or anhydride, (b) ammonia and (c) ammonium salt to enhance the sizing characteristics, (a),(b) and (c) provide the compsn, with a total acidity of >=1000 ppm. The components (b) and (c) maybe provided by the reaction product of urea and an acid selected from sulphamic-, phosphoric-, oxalic-, methane sulphonic-, trichloroacetic nitric-, sulphuric-, hydrochloric-, stearic-and acetic acid the product has a total acidity of >=1000 ppm. opt. additional (b) and (c) may be added to the urea-acid reaction product, component (c) may be provided by reacting ammonia with acids of the rosin or (b) may be provided by reacting (c) with ammonia producing constituents of the rosin The compsns. exhibit superior sizing properties c. f prior art sizes and form brighter and stronger paper products. The sizes assist in the drying of the sheet when used as pulp additive and more water may be added to the pulp stock to improve the orientation of the paper fibres on the machine wire.
