1445247 Finishing fabric edges PARKSCRAMER CO 10 Oct 1974 [10 Oct 1973 (2)] 43989/74 Headings DIE D1K and D1S [Also in Division B8] A textile fabric formed at least partially by interengaging strands of yarn is wound convolutely to form a roll and, whilst being wound, is heated along a lengthwise zone thereof to partially expel thermoplastic material therefrom to substantially weaken a predetermined portion of the fabric, this weakened portion being rupturable to separate a portion of the roll to one side of a plane of weakness defined by the weakened portion. Preferably, the weakened portion is formed by a hot air jet described in Specification No. 1393658. The weakened portion may be formed substantially medially of the fabric width, i.e. in a plane 16, Fig. 2, to separate the fabric into two segments, and/or adjacent one edge of the fabric, i.e. in a plane 15, for facilitating separation of an end segment 14 of the roll, e.g. for removal of a fringed side edge produced by a shuttleless loom. Separation produces a ravel resistant edge 24, Fig. 5, at which globules of thermoplastic material adhere together adjacent weft yarns 22. Specified woven fabrics contain (a) cotton yarns in the warp and a blend of polyester and cotton yarns in the weft, (b) thermoplastic fibre warp yarns and natural fibre weft yarns, and (c) warp and weft yarns composed wholly of cotton throughout most of the fabric with wholly thermoplastic warp yarns inserted into the fabric at the locations where weakened portions are to be formed. |
