PURPOSE:To isolate the titled compound useful as a raw material for agricultural chemicals in high purity from a reaction mixture obtained by nitrating 3-chlorobenzoic acid as a starting material, and hydrolyzing the nitration product. CONSTITUTION:3-Chlorobenzoic acid obtained by oxidizing 3-chlorotoluene separated from a nuclear chlorination mixture of toluene with an adsorbent with air in the liquid phase as a starting material is nitrated to give a mixture of nitro- substituted-3-chlorobenzoic acids containing 6-nitro-3-chlorobenzoic acid as a main component. The resultant mixture is then hydrolyzed with an alkali metal hydroxide and a copper compound, e.g. cuprous oxide, in a molar amount of 3 times or more of that of the mixture to afford a mixture of nitro-substituted-3- hydroxybenzoic acids containing the titled compound as a main component, and the titled compound is then separated from the mixture. |
