PURPOSE:To obtain a tetraacetic acid-type chelating resin at high reaction conversions, by reacting a halogen-containing polymer with a polyamine and then with an alpha-haloacetic acid. CONSTITUTION:An aminated polymer is formed by reacting a halogen-containing polymer (e.g., chloromethylstyrene polymer) with a polyamine (e.g., ethylenediamine). The reaction can be effected by using the polyamine itself as a solvent, or in the presence of a solvent such as water, methanol, or toluene, optionally together with a separately added basic substance. The obtained aminated polymer is reacted with an alpha-haloacetic acid or its salt or ester (e.g., chloroacetic acid). The presence of a basic acid and further, an iodide ion are prefebable. Thus, a tetraacetic acid-type chelating resin useful as a sequestering agent can be produced in high reaction conversions. |
